Why does the AG Smart Mapping exist?
- goals and tasks
- Status of the project
- Milestones towards active operation
- Collaboration and differentiation from other working groups
|
- Markus Seifert |

|
Due to the sometimes unclear and often different expectations at the beginning, the Smart Mapping working group first had to clarify the generally defined goals for itself and find and consolidate its own role within the AdV. This led to the concrete plans for the development and implementation of the basemap.de map services that are now due for publication. The article provides a rough overview of the goals, the status of the work and the next milestones, which will be discussed in more detail in the following presentations.

At the beginning of the project, neither the target architecture, software nor input data was clearly defined. The beta version was developed in an agile manner using some methods known from Scrum. A separate communication and decision-making culture was also developed, which has proven to be extremely efficient and resilient. |

Since considerations about the future of the map were pursued in the AdV a few years ago and the “Smart Mapping” project was subsequently set up in 2018, the (agile) developments that have taken place so far have continually made the goals of this project more concrete. An overview of the current status of previous implementations as well as planned further projects is given. |

The initial data from the individual countries serve as the (data) basis for the Smartmapping project. For this purpose, a corresponding provision process was implemented and it should be shown how the data is currently being transferred automatically. Through appropriate error management and its feedback to the countries, this process should and will ensure that the association logic of the provided initial and difference data is always present in the secondary data stock. At the same time, the transition to GeoInfoDok 7.1 also represents a certain challenge for the Smartmapping project. |

SmartMapping relies on a needs-driven data model; depending on the specific requirements, the data is prepared as optimally as possible. We would like to demonstrate the data flow within the project and its main features using examples. |

Production of vector tile archives (VectorTiles)
- t-rex (range of functions)
- Toml file
- Tiling automation
- Differences between the tile archives

Vector tiles offer some advantages over raster tiles, such as greatly reduced data volume. The open source software t-rex is presented, which is used to generate the vector tiles in SmartMapping. The automated production process of vector tiles is explained and the different tile archives are discussed. |

The data available in the AdV and used in the smart mapping process is subject to certain documentation, quality and modeling regulations, but leaves some scope and sometimes gaps that make it difficult to derive nationwide standard products. We show examples and ways to remedy such data gaps and quality deficits. |
